Bachelor of Science in Medical Laboratory Technology (B.Sc. MLT)

Clinical Laboratory Science is one of the important areas in Health Sciences, which supports the clinicians by providing laboratory test evidences in the treatment of patients. It is the study of the scientific principles underlying the disciplines practiced in diagnostic and medical research laboratories (Biochemistry, Cytology, Cytogenetics, Haematology, Histopathology, Cytopathology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Immunopathology, and Toxicology). The goal of this program is to produce clinical laboratory experts who are academically sound, technically skilled and fully capable of performing various clinical laboratory tests with quality control as well as interpretation of the results.

Students are simply trained to pursue careers in teaching, administration, research and development, and industry. Moreover, the program aims to make students able to appreciate the sanctity of life that enables them to make a valuable contribution to medical treatment and people's health.

Objective:

This course is designed to prepare students to work in specialized medical and pathology laboratories that provide diagnostic services that are an essential part of the health care system. The tests performed provide valuable information that is used in the diagnosis and treatment of patients.

  • Provide adequate educational background for careers in Medical Laboratory Science profession
  • Study and strengthen the existing Medical Laboratory Science practices in the private and public institutions through continuing education and training programs
  • Assist Medical Laboratory Science and related organizations in solving their problems by providing consulting services
  • Contribute to Medical Laboratory Science literature relevant to Nepal through research and publications

Admission:

Every year the application of students is called by Pokhara University and its affiliated colleges. Modern Technical College, an affiliated institution holds entrance examination for B.Sc. MLT program. Notice on call for entrance examination is published in the major daily publications and the official website of Modern Technical College.

Duration:  Minimum 4 years to maximum 8 years

Eligibility:

The applicants must have minimum of 50% aggregate marks/grades in 10+2 (Biological Science) or PCL (Biological Science) or I. Sc. or equivalent in addition with the minimum of 50% aggregates marks in Physics-Chemistry-Biology (PCB) to apply for the entrance examination.

Or

Minimum of 2.4 CGPA in aggregate (C+ Grade in Physics, Chemistry, Biology and minimum C in other subjects).

 

Besides the basic academic requirement, an entrance examination will be held for all applicants.

Admission procedure:

The notification of admission of successful candidates after entrance examination following selection interview is published in the official website of MTC.

Applicants are required to submit the following necessary documents at the time of admission:

  1. Attested mark sheets of SEE and 10+2 education
  2. Character & Migration certificates issued by the school last attended
  3. Attested copy of citizenship

Professional Affiliation:

After completion of degreethe Bachelor of Science in Medical Laboratory Technology is accredited by the Nepal Health Professional Council (NHPC).

Scope:

After graduation, B.Sc.MLT degree holders, start their profession as a Clinical Laboratory Experts. Their knowledge and techniques are applied as a tool to diagnose the diseases. Therefore, the diagnosis of a medical doctor is further confirmed by the laboratory tests. Their services are essential in every hospital, clinic and research center.
